A parent’s guide to making the right choice

Pram strollers, once a thing of the past, are now back in the height of stroller-chic. Not only do they look cute but they offer great all-round protection for babies on the go. What is more, they allow babies to face their parents and research has shown that this is great for helping them to feel secure. Top stroller models include Bertini, Bugaboo, Quinny and Silver-Cross prams. With so many models to choose from, our buying guide outlines useful qualities to look out for when deciding on a pram stroller.

1. Size & Weight

The prams of yesteryear were big, bulky affairs that would take up most of the sidewalk but the models nowadays are a lot more lighter and compact. Check that the pram fits through small spaces and is not too heavy when you account for the added weight of a baby.

2. Versatility

Standard fixed-position prams are limited in their use as your baby will outgrow them very rapidly. Most of the pram models currently in production are 2-in-1 convertible models so they can accommodate a reversible toddler seat for when your baby is older. Some 3-in-1 models can also accommodate a car seat and parameters feature multi-position seats which can gradually be inclined gradually as your child gets older.

3. Compactability

Make sure that you are happy with the way that the pram folds and unfolds and that it can fit into your car boot or other storage space. It is best to look for a model with removable bassinets or seats for more compact storage.

4. Capacity

A good pram should be able to safely carry a newborn baby and be adaptable enough to carry a child up to toddler age if it is a convertible model.

5. Safety

Essential safety features include easy-to-operate parking brakes, good newborn support and a 5-point safety harness. The sides of the pram should offer good protection for a small baby.

6. Handling

Front swivel wheels are featured on almost all modern models and some top-of-the-range prams can be reversed to optimize them for different terrains. Height-adjustable handles with easy-grip padding are also desirable features to look out for particularly if parents are of significantly different heights.

7. Comfort

The best thing about choosing a pram over other types of strollers is the comfort which it offers your baby. Most models will have washable mattresses and if it is a convertible type you should also look for well-padded, supportive seats with multi-recline settings. A good-sized sun canopy and rain-covers should also be included.

8. Price

Prams generally tend to be the most expensive type of strollers and prices can range from around $200 to $1000 and upwards for retro models. To avoid paying for features you don’t really need, make a list of all the must-have characteristics the stroller must have and try to match this sensibly to your budget.
